I struggle with even publishing this material publicly, because I am concerned with those could mistaken our authorship as if we are self-proclaimed experts on the subject of character training our children. Let me make this extremely clear, we are NOT experts. In fact, we intend to share some examples of our daily struggles in areas of our own character training. We too, are sinners, and dependent on God’s grace in our lives as He reveals areas needed for growth. These struggles can be either with specific sin, or simply being unaware or lacking understanding in how we can begin to apply God’s biblical principles in our lives.
However, recognizing our struggles and failures should not surpass the truth, that with Christ and the power of the Gospel, our lives can be transformed. Then, our hearts can be changed, growth in our character, and then our lives will point to the Savior, for whom all the glory is due!

So, here we are…. writing these self-evaluation checklists and doing a studies…..and “whammo”…without expecting it, God so graciously rebuked me. Did I really think this would be mostly about “the boys”? As we began writing the self-evaluation checklist on diligence this week, I started recognizing that I am such a hypocrite. Oh, this is SUCH a work in progress, but the boys and I have put together some tools for walking out “humility”. We included Scripture references, Review Questions, Application Questions, and a Encouraging Letter Template (for those who need a jumpstart for writing an encouraging note to somebody). You can view them on the website (www.beingintentional.com) or download Word Document versions too! ALL FREE!

I’m not going to attempt to give a full definition of Character, but narrow it down to three specific motifs.
- Character is the the inner part or “the core” of a person.
- Character is the the “habits of the heart” or the “consistency of a persons everyday talk and actions. A random act or single statement would not be an accurate assessment of true character.”
- Character is also revealed in the crucible of testing—otherwise known as the “cost”.
Character can be an immense challenge both personally as well as culturally. While there are scandalous headlines and Christian leaders falling before us, in all honesty, humility would respond with a good look in the mirror. Without condemnation, let’s begin with looking deep within ourselves and asking God to illuminate areas so that God can change our hearts. Only then, can true change come. When our hearts are yielded to God, we then can begin to change the way that we walk.
